Terrorism must not become a Political Machismo Test

In response to reports that Lord Goldsmith has said he is not yet convinced of the case for an increase in the detention limit from 28 days to 90 days, Jenny Willott MP, said:

"The Government can hardly expect to instill public confidence of its handling of terrorism when Government ministers contradict each other on a daily basis over anti terrorism legislation.

"This is the product of turning what should be a calm and rational assessment of the threat of terrorism into a political machismo test.

"Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and John Reid will weaken our collective response to the terrorist threat if they choose to turn it into a political football.

"At least Lord Goldsmith seems to believe that evidence should come before politics on such an important matter."
