Employers must play a part in mental health care

Commenting on today's [Wednesday] report from the Social Market Foundation, on mental health and welfare reform, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Jenny Willott said:

"It is clear that the stigma surrounding mental health is preventing employers from tackling the issue and its consequences effectively in the workplace.

"We can no longer assume the NHS will take sole responsibility for the mental health of all workers. Employers must take some responsibility for the well-being of their own staff.

"Employers will benefit from investing in initiatives that keep their staff fit and well, and the Government must take a far more active role in persuading them of this.

"Ministers must not erode incentives for employers to provide better work-based health services if they press ahead with plans to create a 'Fit for Work' service."
