DROP IN UNEMPLOYMENT A WELCOME START BUT LONG ROAD AHEAD- WILLOTT

Jenny Willott, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central and Co Chair of the Party's Parliamentary Committee on Work and Pensions, has today welcomed the drop in unemployment in Wales but warned that more must be done to aid the welsh economy.

Figures released today showed that, compared to September 2009 year, there were 8000 fewer people unemployed in Wales. Across the UK unemployment fell by 9000 people compared to June 2010.

Commenting on today's figures, Jenny said:

"This is a positive start to the Government's plans to encourage job creation and will embarrass those in the Labour Party who talked of mass unemployment within six months of the coalition Government.

"However, it is not enough to make up for the loss of public sector jobs that will happen as the Government cleans up the financial mess left by Labour.

"That is why it is so important that the Government continues to encourage growth in the private sector here in Wales. I hope that investment in green jobs and new technologies will help continue to drive down unemployment while moving Wales' economy away from over reliance on the public sector."
