Jenny Willott, MP for Cardiff Central, has welcomed the news that this month the Coalition Government has begun the process of destroying millions of unnecessarily held DNA samples in line with their commitment to clear innocent people from the DNA database.

Speaking today, Jenny Willott said:

"I have been fighting since 2007 to get all innocent people removed from the DNA Database; I even laid a Bill before Parliament in 2008 calling for the Government to make this commitment.

"Not only does keeping innocent people's details on the database violate the fundamental premise that people are innocent until proven guilty, it has also not improved crime detection rates and costs serious amounts of money that could be more usefully spent on front-line policing.

"I am absolutely delighted that, following the Liberal Democrat-led Protection of Freedoms Act, the Coalition Government is now doing the right thing getting rid of these unnecessary records."
