Jenny Willott, MP for Cardiff Central, has welcomed the announcement that Cardiff Foodbank has been awarded the top grant as part of a Red Nose Day initiative between Netmums and Comic Relief.

Cardiff Foodbank received the most votes of five charities selected to compete for a share of £200,000, and so has won the largest grant of £80,000.

Commenting, Jenny Willott MP said:

"I have seen first-hand the excellent work being done week in, week out by the Cardiff Foodbank, and I am absolutely delighted that the impact of their work is being recognised.

"This £80,000 will go directly towards helping families and individuals who sadly are struggling to make ends meet right here in Cardiff, and will make a huge difference.

"Cardiff Foodbank is thoroughly deserving of the top award, but it's also great that all five charities are winners, as they will all receive a share of the money."

Cardiff Foodbank said: "Cardiff Foodbank is absolutely delighted to receive £80,000 from Comic Relief! At a time when Cardiff Foodbank has experienced a 40% increase in demand since Christmas, this award will be a terrific help in our expansion of service provision, and help provide for our need of more warehousing and office space. This exciting social networking campaign would not have been possible without the generosity of Comic Relief and NetMums and the support of so many of Cardiff Foodbank's Trustees, friends, partners and volunteers - It's been a fabulous team effort all round. Thank you everyone!"
