Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central Jenny Willott is outraged at the proposals by Cardiff Council to fine residents £100 for failing to put their rubbish in the correct bins.

The proposal is part of a 'zero tolerance' initiative which could result in residents having to pay up to £1,000 if they fail to pay the fine within 2 weeks.

Jenny Willott MP said:

"This amount is absolutely outrageous and totally disproportionate when compared to the sums charged for parking illegally - something which is a much bigger issue in the city.

"Cardiff currently recycles more than half of the rubbish it produces. While I agree that we cannot allow ourselves to become complacent, fining people such a large amount of money, with the threat of being squeezed for even more if they can't afford to pay up straight away, is not the answer.

"As elected representatives, it is the responsibility of the Council to educate people and provide means for them to become more environmentally friendly, not bleed them dry until they comply!"
