Responding to today's figures that show employment in Wales increased by 5,000 over the last quarter, Welsh Liberal Democrats Jenny Willott MP and Eluned Parrott AM said:

Jenny Willott MP:

"I am of course pleased by today's figures showing that employment has risen in Wales over the three months to June. The Liberal Democrats are working hard in Government to build a stronger economy and a fairer society, and these efforts are starting to show fruit. However, the outlook for economic growth across the UK is still uncertain and progress is patchy.

The Liberal Democrats in Government have helped deliver 1.2m apprentices and 110,000 work placements for young people out of work, despite the terrible economic mess Labour left behind, but we know there is much more to do.

That's why we have launched the One Million Jobs campaign, to build on this record. I would like to see the Welsh Government also go further and fund a programme to make businesses and young people aware of the benefits of apprenticeships."

Eluned Parrott AM:

"These figures are moving in the right direction, which is of course good news. However, I am concerned there has been a rise in unemployment in those under the age of 24 especially in Wales which again remains stubbornly high.

"Young people, especially those who have just left education need to be aware of the full range of options available to them which includes training and apprenticeships.
"I want to see Welsh businesses thrive and have the confidence to take on more staff. For that to happen, we need both the UK and Welsh Government working constructively together for the people of Wales."
