Labour “needs to respond” on Gabalfa parking pressures

Cllr. Ed Bridges and Eluned Parrott AM are standing up for Gabalfa residents over parking issues.

Residents in Gabalfa have been told by Cardiff's Labour Council that they must continue to wait for help with local parking congestion.

Ed Bridges, Lib Dem councillor for Gabalfa ward, has consistently argued that more road space in the area should be given over to resident-only parking. Currently, council policy dictates that a maximum of 50% of a street can be allocated as 'resident-only'; yet for historical reasons, houses in Heath ward around UHW benefit from 100% resident-only parking even though most of those properties also have private driveways!

Ed said: "There is a clear inequality here, with houses one side of the A48 getting more resident-only parking than houses in Gabalfa ward. The policy needs to be revisited urgently, but Labour are dragging their heels. Residents around Clodien Avenue are already struggling to park because of hospital commuter parking, the large number of multiple-occupancy properties locally and the nearby student halls of residence. These residents need help from the council - will Labour give it to them?"

The relevant (Labour) Cabinet Member has now agreed to meet with ward councillors from Gabalfa to discuss the matter, and has said the issue will be considered as part of a review into current parking policy. However, Lib Dem Assembly Member for South Wales Central, Eluned Parrott, has warned that this will be a lengthy process: "It's good that the council will review the policy - but the work has already been done for them. The Gabalfa Lib Dem Focus Team carried out a survey of residents over a year ago, and found that over 90% of respondents wanted more resident-only parking. There's a clear need there, and the council needs to respond."

As always, your local Lib Dem representatives will keep you posted on these matters.
