Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, today committed her support for engineering as part of Tomorrow's Engineers Week (#TEWeek13), and called for young people to seriously consider engineering as a career.

Tomorrow's Engineers Week, running from 4-8 November 2013, is a collaborative effort between industry and government to change outdated perceptions about engineering careers among young people, their parents and teachers. The activity taking place during the week demonstrates that engineering offers rewarding, creative and well-paid job opportunities for young women as well as men, in a broad range of dynamic environments like fashion, music, sport, computer gaming, construction, film special effects and environmental technology.

Local MP Jenny Willott said:

"Engineering makes a huge impact on almost every aspect of our everyday lives and many people simply don't realise how valuable engineering skills are. I hope Tomorrow's Engineers Week will encourage young people in Cardiff - particularly young women - to look at careers in engineering with fresh eyes."

EngineeringUK Chief Executive, Paul Jackson, said:

"Tomorrow's Engineers Week is a fantastic initiative, bringing together in collaboration Government, businesses, professional institutions and the wider engineering community to inspire our next generation of engineers. The UK needs more engineers and, to achieve this vital aim, we must excite young people about the range of engineering careers and show them the pathways into engineering. The Week helps to put engineering in the frame, and encourages young people to explore further through the Tomorrow's Engineers website."

Working with over 40 partner organisations, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the engineering industry developed Tomorrow's Engineers Week to promote engineering in all its forms as an exciting and varied career choice.
