ProfileJenny Willott, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, has welcomed the news that under manifesto plans announced by the Liberal Democrats children in state-funded schools, including academies and free schools, will be guaranteed age appropriate sex and relationship education.

The plans also include a curriculum guarantee of teaching pupils financial literacy and citizenship lessons.

This 'Curriculum for Life' means that Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) will be compulsory in all state-funded schools to ensure that children are taught valuable life skills.

Commenting, Jenny Willott MP, said:

"It is really important that all young people have the chance to learn life skills such as sex and relationship education and financial planning. At the moment, academies and free schools don't have to teach sex and relationship education, but the Lib Dems would change this.

"Lessons should be age-appropriate and based on expert guidance, to make sure that young people leave school properly equipped for adult life. We need to update the guidance for teachers so that it takes account of social media and the internet, which in recent years have transformed the way young people learn about sex.

"The Lib Dems want to ensure that all children are helped to make informed choices in their personal lives and to give them the best opportunity to succeed in life."
