Letter to the press on Shared Parental Leave

Dear Sir,

As both a Liberal Democrat and a mother, I am extremely proud that from next April new parents will be able to share leave in order to look after their new child.

That means that couples finding out now they are expecting a baby will be able to start planning for a more flexible way of sharing the new responsibilities of being a parent.

This extra leave will allow parents more choice during that precious first year and will help to promote equality in the workforce by removing the assumption that it is women who will always take time off work to take care of children.

Shared parental leave will also give men the confidence to play an equal role in caring for their children, removing some of the stigma surrounding paternity leave.

As well as introducing this radical new policy, the Lib Dems are also committed to giving fathers six weeks paternity leave. Fathers want to and do play a crucial role in their children's lives, right from the start, and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to get involved.

Liberal Democrats are committed to deliver a stronger economy while creating a fairer society, enabling people to have more choice and flexibility in how they live their lives.

Yours sincerely,

Jenny Willott
