Cardiff Liberal Democrat campaigners have been bowled over by the response they have received to a petition they launched yesterday demanding the Post Office sticks to its stated intent to keep a post office branch in Cyncoed when the current one closes on 29 July.
The current post office branch located within the Martin’s store at 287 Cyncoed Road is set to close at the end of the month because McColl’s retail group has decided to close down the shop.
Cyncoed Liberal Democrat councillors, Robert Hopkins and Bablin Molik, quickly launched an online petition together with the lead Liberal Democrat candidate for South Wales Central for the 2021 Senedd elections, Rodney Berman. They want to put pressure on the Post Office to find and secure an alternative site for the branch within the local area.
Councillor Bablin Molik said: “We lost our other branch in Clearwater Way a few years ago, despite the Post Office indicating at the time that they wanted to find another site for it. We can’t let that happen again and lose Cyncoed’s last remaining post office.
“This time we must ensure that the Post Office is held to its promise, which is why we have launched our petition. The fact that so many residents have signed it in just 24 hours, shows the strength of feeling that exists in the local community.”
Councillor Robert Hopkins said: “The area has a lot of elderly residents who rely on access to the post office. Those without cars will struggle to get to the nearest other branches in Pentwyn and Llanishen, and reductions in the number of buses serving Cyncoed in recent years mean it’s also harder for them to get to other branches such as the one in Albany Road in Roath.”
Rodney Berman added: “Lockdown has reminded us the real value of having local facilities on our doorsteps, which is why it is so important that we fight to keep valued local services like this.
“As we move to a new normal, it’s important that we do what we can to build sustainable local communities where we don’t have to travel so far to access the services we need.
“Losing this branch would be disastrous for the local community, and it’s clear that residents share that view. This will very much strengthen our hand in making our case to the Post Office that they must find a way to retain a branch in the area.”
