Local Liberal Democrat MP Jenny Willott has welcomed the establishment of the UK's first ever "Small Business Saturday", taking place this weekend (on 7th December) and organised by the Federation of Small Businesses.

The event is taking place in shopping centres and high streets up and down the country and is a chance for small businesses to promote themselves and generate more trade. In the US, where Small Business Saturday is an established commercial holiday, it generated $5.5 billion in sales last year.

In the UK, Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign; some businesses are planning special deals for customers, showcase events, joint marketing with local media and much more.

Commenting, Jenny Willott said:

"As someone who has championed small businesses I was delighted to hear about this initiative. The first Saturday in December is always one of the busiest shopping days of the year so it is a great opportunity for small businesses to really show what they have to offer; I will be visiting small businesses in my constituency on Saturday and I urge local residents to consider doing the same."

Federation of Small Businesses Chairman John Allan said:

"The Federation of Small Businesses is delighted that Jenny Willott MP is backing the very first Small Business Saturday. The campaign is an excellent moment to celebrate the contribution that the smallest firms make to local communities and the national economy."
