Wasteful Home Office Abandons Single Non Emergency Number Rollout

November 28, 2006 3:34 PM

Commenting on the announcement by the Home Office that the national rollout of the Single Non Emergency Number (SNEN) pilots, currently operating in Cardiff, will be delayed, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"The Single Non Emergency Number seems to working well in Cardiff. It offers residents a single easy route to the authorities for minor incidents and complaints, freeing up the Police to focus on more serious problems.

"The Government isn't being honest when it says that the SNEN pilots have unexpected costs - in fact they have come in under budget. The suspicion is that the Home Office has got its financial knickers in a twist and has panicked.

"Meanwhile, in Wales alone, police forces have been forced to spend £900,000 and waste 30,000 hours of police time on abandoned police force mergers.

"If the Government hadn't wasted so much money on that hare-brained scheme, they might have enough money to rollout out across the country the SNEN pilots which seem to be working."
