Responding to the Transport Secretary, Phillip Hammond's, announcement that the electrification of the Great Western mainline between Reading and Swansea is still under consideration, Roger Williams and Jenny Willott called for the line to be electrified and for a meeting with the Secretary of State and Welsh Assembly Members to make this case.

Commenting, Roger said:

"For 15 years the rail link between Wales and London has lacked investment. So much so that journey times are actually slower now than they were then.

"I'm glad that, despite the economic situation, the government is still considering this upgrade. Good transport links are crucial to the economy of Wales and this upgrade would be an enormous boost to the Welsh economy."

Jenny Willott added:

"Electrification of the line has huge support from businesses and commuters alike and is crucial for the future prosperity of South Wales. I very much hope that the Department of Transport will decide to electrify the line, and as soon as possible."
