Jenny Willott MP response to Prime Minister’s Europe speech

January 24, 2013 9:15 AM

Commenting on the speech this morning by David Cameron on Britain's membership of the European Union, Cardiff Central MP Jenny Willott said:

"I believe that we are stronger and safer as part of the EU and that leaving would be a huge risk. Europe isn't perfect, and I believe there is a real need for reform, but pulling out of the EU would risk millions of jobs, leave us vulnerable to crime and terrorism, and weaken our voice in global affairs.

"The Liberal Democrats' top priority is to build a stronger economy in a fairer society. The Prime Minister's announcement of an ill-defined, protracted renegotiation of Britain's status within the European Union makes that harder to achieve, creating uncertainty for British businesses and international investors deciding whether or not to invest in the UK.

"Committing to a referendum in years to come when we don't even know what we will be voting on seems pointless, particularly as we have already committed - and put into law - that a referendum must be held before any further transfer of powers from the UK to the EU. All this proposal does is undermine business confidence and create uncertainty when our economy can least afford it."
