Falling crime rates show police reform is working – Jenny Willott MP

January 24, 2013 2:09 PM

New figures released today by the Home Office show crime continuing to fall under the Coalition. The latest Crime Survey shows crime levels in Wales have fallen 7% over the past year, and crime across the UK is now at the lowest level since the survey began.

Commenting, Cardiff Central MP Jenny Willott said:

"These new figures are a sign of the hard work of our police force all over the country, but they are also proof that the Coalition's much-needed reforms of the police service are working.

"Liberal Democrats believe in giving power to local communities to fight crime and to tackle the causes of anti-social behaviour. We want local people to be involved in setting sentences and making offenders pay back the community.

"It is clear that the answer to crime is not simply to lock people up for longer periods, but instead to reform the system so we can tackle the root cause of the problem and ensure that upon release, offenders are ready, willing and able to make a positive contribution to society."
