Cardiff Council decimates local facilities – Jenny Willott MP

Commenting on the extensive cuts announced by Labour-led Cardiff Council last night, MP for Cardiff Central Jenny Willott said:

"I am deeply disappointed to hear of the decisions that Cardiff Council have made, which will be devastating for the local community.

"The Plasnewydd Community Centre, which they are planning to close, holds no end of classes and activities, not only helping people to stay fit and healthy but also providing a vital after-school service for hard-working local parents.

"They also want to close Splott Pool; given how relatively few pools there are in Cardiff, this is bound to mean people having to travel further and also impact on the other pools.

"I am equally dismayed that Cardiff Riding School may close. The facility costs relatively little to fund and is a tremendous source of joy for many disabled children and adults. I have already been contacted by constituents who have expressed anger at the news and on their behalf I shall fight to keep it open.

"Local Labour Councillors should be ashamed of themselves. They owe it to residents to explain why they would support a cut to services that will affect so many in Cardiff.

"It is frankly astounding that whilst they can't find the very minimal amount of money needed to maintain these important local resources, they are happy to spend over a million pounds on more management and bureaucracy. It is a complete slap in the face for local people.

"This clearly demonstrates Labour's priorities - they are not interested in protecting communities. The Council is choosing to cut services while lining the pockets of senior managers.

"These cuts can't be blamed on the Coalition Government; time and again, they lambast cuts being made in Westminster as unfair, yet they are the ones making ill-thought through decisions which will have negative consequences for local communities in both the short-term and the long-term."
