Jenny Willott MP supports campaign for a Welsh National Mining Memorial

March 12, 2013 5:00 PM

Jenny Willott MP is supporting the Aber Valley Heritage Group's appeal for a Welsh National Mining Memorial.

This year is the centenary of the Universal (Senghenydd) mining disaster, the biggest disaster in British mining history , in which 440 men and boys were killed, some as young as 14.

The Aber Valley Heritage Group have already purchased an appropriate plot of land at the site of the disaster, where the Universal Colliery once stood, and are creating a Memorial Garden and a Wall of Remembrance.

However, at present there is no Welsh national memorial to commemorate the sacrifice of so many miners who lost their lives in the Welsh coalfields. The Aber Valley Heritage Group are fundraising to create such a memorial at the Senghenydd site, dedicated not only to the 440 killed at the Universal Colliery but to all those who lost their lives in any of the 203 mining disasters in Wales.
