Gabalfa team oppose 24hr off-licence application

April 17, 2013 8:27 AM

Councillors and Lib Dems in Gabalfa ward have said they will oppose a new application for a 24-hour off-licence on Whitchurch Road.

The application, from the new 'Family Choice' shop on the old Costcutter site, is seeking permission to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Cllrs. Gareth Holden and Ed Bridges are objecting to a 24-hour alcohol licence for the Family Choice shop on the former Costcutter site.

Local Lib Dem councillor, Ed Bridges, said: "We will be opposing this application. There is no precedent for these sorts of hours in our area. Indeed, no similar premises operates anywhere nearby, and this would clearly have a significant impact on what is a residential area. Because of concerns about potential public nuisance, we will be opposing the application. We will also be calling on South Wales Police to raise concerns as well, given that our last local PACT meeting highlighted people's fears that further licensed premises around Whitchurch Road would lead to an increase in crime and disorder."

Anyone wishing to register an objection should send comments by e-mail to [email protected] or in writing to the Licensing Section, Cardiff Council, Room 161, City Hall, Cardiff, CF10 3ND. The application is for the Family Choice shop, 138 Whitchurch Road, and the reference number for the application is CCCP/01713. You can download a form to help you make representations from Cardiff Council's website. Please send a copy of any comments to Cllr. Ed Bridges so that he can back up residents' concerns when he addresses the Licensing Sub-Committee on the application.

The deadline for comments is the end of the month. Your local councillors (Ed Bridges and Gareth Holden) will be making a detailed submission along with local Lib Dem Assembly Member, Eluned Parrott.
