Don’t let the unions choose the next MP for Cardiff Central - Willott

Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central Jenny Willott is demanding that the Labour candidate who is chosen to run against her in the 2015 election proves they are seeking to represent the people of Cardiff, and not the unions.

In light of the recent scandal in Falkirk and questions over the undue influence unions have had on selection processes and campaigning within the Labour party, Jenny is calling on Labour to clarify that they won't allow their candidate to be chosen by a union.

Commenting, Jenny Willott MP said:

"Trade unions have a vital role to play in our labour market. But that role does not include choosing our political representatives above the heads of the rest of the local community. Allowing unions to choose candidates really makes a mockery of the entire democratic process. It could fundamentally mean that unions are hand-picking Members of Parliament. That is not acceptable.

"Labour candidate hopeful Jo Stevens openly declares on her website that she is a trade union solicitor and proudly displays all of the union endorsements she has; from the GMB to USDAW, from Unite to Unison, from BECTU to UCATT and more. She even cites Tom Watson MP as a supporter, who recently resigned from the Shadow Cabinet because of a selection scandal!

"Cardiff deserves a Member of Parliament who works for the people and is answerable to the people. That is what I have done for the past 8 years, and what I hope to continue to do after 2015. Labour left behind a horrendous mess in 2010, which I and my Liberal Democrat colleagues have been working hard to help fix. I will continue to work tirelessly both within the Government and at a constituency level to address the needs and concerns of the people I represent in Cardiff. They are the ones who elected me and they are my priority. Can Labour say the same?"
