Eluned Parrott AM and Cllr. Ed Bridges want to hear YOUR views on the trial safety scheme at Gabalfa Interchange.

Lib Dems in Gabalfa ward want to hear your views on whether or not the trial safety scheme at Gabalfa Interchange has been a success.

An online opinion poll has been set up to gauge public views on whether on the trial scheme.

As we have outlined previously, Cardiff Council are spending £70k to try and reduce the number of accidents at the roundabout by:

  • Creating a 20mph limit on the roundabout;
  • Extending the existing 30mph limits onto the slip roads;
  • Restricting the carriageway width around the roundabout and add lane markings;
  • Creating dedicated left turn lanes at some of the slip roads onto the roundabout.

However, despite the investment, opinions are split on whether or not the scheme has helped. Ed Bridges, Lib Dem councillor for Gabalfa ward, said: "I met recently with Cardiff Council officials, and I was surprised to hear them say that they believed the scheme had been a big success so far. The feedback I have had from residents and motorists is that there are still problems at the roundabout, and I want to make sure that the views of the public are listened to alongside whatever technical assessments the council might make of the scheme."

Lib Dem Assembly Member for South Wales Central, Eluned Parrott, added: "In particular, the reduction in the number of lanes around the roundabout has been mentioned as a concern, as have queues at peak hours. The trial is due to continue to run for much of September, but we don't want the scheme made permanent without a very clear demonstration of public support."

More information can be found in Cardiff Council's factsheet on the trial scheme, and anyone wanting to make more detailed comments on the trial should e-mail [email protected] (marking the e-mail as "Feedback on the Gabalfa Interchange pilot safety scheme"); do copy in Cllr. Ed Bridges ([email protected]) so that he can ensure the public's views are listened to.

You can take part in the poll here. We will ensure that the results are fed back to Cardiff Council for their consideration.
