Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, has welcomed the modernisation of the Post Office network, which will provide for significant improvements for up to 6,000 branches (around half of the network).

Commenting, Jenny Willott said:

"Following years of closures under Labour, the Coalition Government has committed to maintaining a Post Office network of at least 11,500 branches and is investing £1.34 billion over the course of this Parliament to achieve this.

"It is Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government who are working to guarantee the future of our Post Offices, and I'm delighted that we have launched the largest investment programme in the history of the Post Office. Local residents will benefit from a modern retail environment and significantly longer opening hours to ensure the post office remains at the heart of our community for generations to come.

"Here in Cardiff, the Post Office is consulting on moving its Cyncoed Branch a little further along the same street and changing to the new 'Local' post office model. The public consultation starts today and is open for 6 weeks, so anyone who would like to make the Post Office aware of their views on the proposal will need to respond before 26th November."

Commenting, Business Minister Jo Swinson said:

"Post Offices provide vital services to more than 20 million people every week who visit their local branch to send letters, manage their finances, and for the hundreds of thousands of pensioners who rely on them for their pensions.

"Liberal Democrats have put in place plans that will protect and develop the Post Office network so that it will be on a sustainable footing for the future.

"It's no secret that the Post Office network needs to undergo significant change in order to serve customers in the modern age and be sustainable for years to come. The modernisation programme with its new 'Main' and 'Local' models is a key part of this, providing significant improvements for up to 6,000 branches."
