Global charity movement launches in Cardiff

August 12, 2014 4:05 PM

Jenny Willott, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, is backing the #GivingTuesday campaign, which launches in Cardiff this week, and asks people to give their time, money or voice to charity for one day.

The team behind #GivingTuesday will be holding an event on Wednesday 13th August 2014 atButetown Community Centre from 2pm-4pm to encourage local charities, groups and businesses to get behind the campaign and start planning for the day on 2nd December 2014.

The movement is being led by the Charities Aid Foundation, working closely with Blackbaud and the Cabinet Office. Already on board as partners are Cancer Research UK, the RSPCA, the Financial Times, Argos and Glamour. The team hope to encourage many organisations in the Cardiff area to sign up.

#GivingTuesday falls directly after big shopping days Black Friday and Cyber Monday and asks people and organisations to do one simple charitable act on the day in the run up to Christmas. The campaign was launched in the US in 2012 by 92nd Street Y, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and has since become a global movement. Last year the campaign had 10,000 partners worldwide.

Outlining her backing for the campaign, Jenny Willott MP, said:

"#GivingTuesday is a great initiative that gets people across the globe to show their commitment to helping others. Charities are at the heart of so much good that goes on in Cardiff, and we can use #GivingTuesday to show that we are one of the most generous cities across the UK.

"I'm delighted that #GivingTuesday is coming to Cardiff and I hope that charities and businesses across our great city will join me in making some time on December 2nd to support a cause that they care about."

Hannah Terrey, Head of Campaigns at the Charities Aid Foundation, said:

"We're thrilled to be bringing #GivingTuesday to the UK and are optimistic that our very generous nation will come out in force to support charities on the day. We're taking the campaign on the road to share our enthusiasm and make sure we whip up excitement and build support in every single county.

"In the US we've seen some cities really take the campaign up for themselves - Baltimore alone raised millions of dollars - and we hope to inspire the same spirit of competition among cities over here. #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to get people thinking and engaging with charities and their local communities - not just on the day itself, but for years to come."
