Jenny Willott MP was met at the store by Regional Counters Manager, Mark Trevethan, and the Store's Counter Manager, Sarah Spurway and was shown the Fish, Meat, Cheese, Hot Food and Deli counters. During the visit Jenny went behind the scenes to see where and how Sainsbury's staff store and prepare food.

Sainsbury's specialist skills are taught at their food colleges which are City & Guilds accredited. As a result of the investment in skills, Sainsbury's is the first retailer to achieve gold accreditation from Investors in People.

Commenting, Jenny Willott MP, said:

"It was really interesting, particularly since it's a store in which I often shop! I met very friendly counter staff and heard all about the training and qualifications that are available.

"Sainsbury's have 5 training academies around the UK and all counter staff go regularly, firstly for their initial training and then after that they go for top-up training. The staff I spoke to ranged from a woman who started just 12 weeks ago to a woman who has been at the store for 31 years, since it first opened.

"It is clear that Sainsbury's is doing a good job in investing in people and providing them with the necessary skills to provide high quality service to customers. Their staff were enthusiastic, both about their jobs and about the training and support they get from the supermarket. Investing in building staff skills is critical to their business success and to the local economy generally, and it sets an example which other businesses can follow."
