Letter to Wales Online - Black History Month

October 24, 2014 5:47 PM

TalkingDear Editor,

I would like to congratulate the Black History Association Wales, who have worked in partnership with the African Community Centre, Wales Millennium Centre and The Prince's Trust, for putting on a programme of events and workshops in Cardiff and across Wales throughout October to celebrate Black History Month.

The origins of Black History Month stretch back to 1926 when African Caribbean celebrations were established in America. In the UK thousands of events now take place every year in October to celebrate and recognise the contributions and achievements of black people to British society.

Wales has one of the UK's oldest multi-ethnic communities in Cardiff, where the family origins of some black residents can be followed back to the shipping industries of the 1800s. A number of events are still happening until the end of the month and to mark as well the centenary of the First World War, many of this year's activities are focussing on capturing stories and contributions from relatives of the thousands of seaman of African ethnicity working on British ships from 1914.

Well done to everyone involved.

Yours sincerely,

Jenny Willott MP
