Letter to Wales Online - EU Referendum Bill

October 30, 2014 5:50 PM

Dear Editor,

This week David Cameron pulled the plug on a chance to legislate for an EU Referendum despite having a clear opportunity to do so.

Instead of allowing both a Liberal Democrat bill to fix the unfair bedroom tax and a Tory bill for a referendum on EU membership to continue their parliamentary journeys he spiked both.

This is cynical electioneering. The Tories simply don't want to enshrine an In-Out referendum in law before the General Election. If they did David Cameron would be forced to reveal his hand by either backing calls to leave Europe or fight the pro-EU case. The PM simply can't make the sensible case for Europe and keep UKIP voters and his Eurosceptic backbench MPs happy.

The Lib Dems back an EU referendum and we want Britain to stay in because that is how we keep our country strong, prosperous, safe and green. The £2billion of European Structural and Investment Funds that Wales has just be given to be spent on skills and youth employment shows just how much we'd lose out if we left the EU.

It is now David Cameron's turn come clean and finally set out his position on Europe and his party's red-lines.

After all, the General Election is just six months away.

Yours sincerely,

Jenny Willott MP

Cardiff Central

Liberal Democrat
