Post Office

Dear Sir,

Local Post Offices are right at the heart of our communities and provide a vital service for vulnerable and elderly residents across Cardiff.

That is why I am delighted that Liberal Democrats have thrown a crucial lifeline to Post Offices that that will help keep the network strong, as well as support the disabled and elderly people who rely on the post office network. I know from speaking to local people that many rely on the post office for important services, like collecting their pension, getting their tax credits or for basic banking services.

The Post Office Card Account provides simple banking services for people without a traditional bank account and has around 2.5 million users, 4000 just in Cardiff Central. It was due to finish in March 2015 but a £250m deal, secured by Liberal Democrat pension minister Steve Webb, means it will now last until 2022.

I know that this news will be hugely welcomed by people across Cardiff, and will also help sub-postmasters to keep their post offices open. As a former Postal Services minister, I know that the increased footfall from providing the Post Office card account helps generate income for post office branches, and will help ensure that we keep Post Offices across our communities for years to come.

Yours faithfully,

Jenny Willott
