Jenny Willott, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, has signed the Wildlife and Countryside Link's Marine Charter to help improve the health, diversity and productivity of our seas.

The Marine Charter calls for a network of Marine Protected Areas in UK seas and is an initiative of the Wildlife and Countryside Link, which is an umbrella body, whose purpose is to bring together voluntary organisations in the UK to protect and enhance the marine environment, wildlife and the countryside.

More than 100 MPs and 20 Peers have added their support to the 22 UK NGOs championing the call for a full network of Marine Protected Areas around the UK's seas.

Commenting, Jenny Willott MP, said:

"I believe it is vital that we protect the UK's marine environment because marine conservation not only promotes diverse wildlife in UK waters, but it can deliver real economic benefits too.

"The Lib Dems are committed to protecting our oceans and as part of the Coalition Government we have already designated 27 Marine Conservation Zones, which is helping to preserve and protect marine habitats and species in UK waters.

"It is excellent that there is growing cross-party support for Marine Protected Areas and it's really important that we do all we can to ensure that our seas are protected for generations to come."
