Cardiff Liberal Democrats have tabled a budget amendment that would put an additional £500,000 into helping rough sleepers off the streets.
People are being forced to live rough in demeaning and dangerous conditions. It is shameful and we demand better.
We recognise the efforts of the outreach teams who do their best, but they are short of resources.
Our amendment will redirect money from elsewhere towards this issue, which we believe needs immediate intervention.
Reducing Labour's Council Tax hike
The Lib Dem amendment also reduces the proposed rise in Council Tax from Labour’s 4.9% to 4%.
Labour’s default position is that taxes should rise by a minimum of 4.5% in the coming years.
We don’t accept that assumption. We believe that tax rises can be kept lower by imposing greater demands on council departments to meet their savings targets and avoid over-spending.
Labour’s loose control of spending and increased borrowing is storing up long term trouble.
Our proposal for a reduced Council Tax rise will impose some much needed control and rigour.
