Liberal Democrats in Cardiff West have launched a campaign to call on the Welsh Government to create a green recovery plan to ensure we put the environment at the heart of the way we fix our economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cutting carbon emissions offers enormous opportunities to boost the economy and make it fairer. We can make a difference by helping create a society here in Wales that can improve our well-being and reduce inequality at the same time as helping to tackle climate change.
The Committee on Climate Change – an independent body set up to advise the UK Government – has recommended that Wales should set and meet a target to reduce carbon emissions by 2050. Currently the Welsh Government only has a target to reduce them by 80%.
Heath Marshall, Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd candidate for the Cardiff West constituency said: “As we hopefully start to recover from the pandemic next year, there is a great opportunity to build a greener future for Wales. One way to do that is to invest in making existing homes more energy efficient. This can help cut carbon emissions as well as reducing people’s household bills.
“At the moment, however, the Welsh Government simply isn’t investing enough to make this happen. It only has a proposal to make existing social housing more energy efficient, but we would like to see grants made available for all existing homes in Wales as exist now in England.”
Rodney Berman, lead Welsh Liberal Democrat list candidate for the South Wales Central region, added: “We are calling for an emergency green recovery package which could also include grants for nature conservation projects, as well as for more tree planting.
“The Welsh Liberal Democrats want to see the Welsh Government invest more in action to tackle climate change whilst creating many new jobs in the process. We want to see Wales spend £1 billion a year, funded from public and private sources, on measures that can stop the climate breakdown and halt the decline in biodiversity, at the same time as creating jobs and cutting household bills.”
