More than 3,000 Cardiff children in school meal debt

Figures revealed by Cardiff Liberal Democrats show that on 28th February 2022 there were 3,152 pupils with accounts in debt, totalling £41,207.68.

In light of the growing cost of living crisis, the party has called on Cardiff Council to ensure that no child goes without a school meal as a result of their account being in arrears.

Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Cardiff Council Cllr Rhys Taylor said:

“These figures show that even before rising energy prices, families across Cardiff were already struggling to make ends meet.

“The UK Conservative Government’s failure to get to grips with energy bill prices is going to push more families into real financial difficulty, with some unable to pay basic bills and put food on the table.

“We must do everything we can to protect those most who will come under the most pressure in the months ahead, including ensuring that no child goes without a school meal because their account is in arrears.”
