Anger as Labour weigh up moving Ysgol Bro Edern out of east Cardiff

Liberal Democrats in Cardiff have reacted with shock after learning that the city’s Labour council is considering moving Ysgol Bro Edern away from Llanedeyrn Road in Penylan to a completely different part of the city.

The council is currently exploring options for delivering a Welsh medium high school for the south of Cardiff. However, one option under consideration would see Ysgol Bro Edern, which currently serves families in the east and north east of the city, relocated to serve the south instead.

Cardiff Liberal Democrats say they fully support the creation of a new Welsh medium high school for the south of the city. However, they have warned that this must be in addition to existing provision, not by taking a school away from communities that already rely on it.

The party has now launched a petition which already has over a 1,000 signatures, calling on Labour’s leadership at City Hall to rule out relocating Ysgol Bro Edern and to commit to expanding Welsh medium education without cutting provision elsewhere.

Liberal Democrat Lead Candidate for Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf Cllr Rodney Berman said:

“Under Labour’s proposal, one community loses so another can gain. We should be expanding Welsh medium education, not shifting access around the city.

“Families in the east and north east of Cardiff rely on Ysgol Bro Edern. Moving the school would cause unnecessary disruption for pupils, parents and staff, and would undermine confidence in Welsh medium education across Cardiff.”

The Liberal Democrats are urging residents to sign their petition and put pressure on the council to rule out relocating Ysgol Bro Edern and instead deliver genuine expansion of Welsh medium education for all parts of the city.
